PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To surely detect run-out of a ribbon in a thermal printer. SOLUTION: This thermal printer comprises a thermal head 11, a ribbon supplying shaft 12 for supplying the ink ribbon 10 wound therearound in a roll, a ribbon winding shaft 14 for winding the ink ribbon 10, a winding diameter detecting means 3 for detecting the winding diameter of the ink ribbon 10 wound around at least one of the ribbon supplying shaft and the ribbon winding shaft, and a rotational speed detecting means 2 for detecting a rotational speed of at least one of the ribbon supplying shaft and the ribbon winding shaft. The printer further comprises a calculating means 4 that calculates at least one of a supplying speed of the ink ribbon 10 from the ribbon supplying shaft and a winding speed thereof by the ribbon winding shaft 14 based on the detected winding diameter and the detected rotational speed and compares at least one of the supplying speed and the winding speed with a reference ribbon conveyance speed. By comparing the reference ribbon conveyance speed with a reference value, the run-out of the ribbon 10 is detected. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
