PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To identify a gene causing depression, and to provide a method for screening a medicine for treating and/or preventing the depression. SOLUTION: This method for screening the medicine for treating and/or preventing the depression comprises administering a specimen substance into a depression model animal in whose frontal lobe the expression of one or more genes among 36 genes such as inositol-1,4,5-triphosphate I type receptor (Genebank J05510) can more change than that for a normal animal or its frontal lobe cell, and then judging whether the expression of the gene in the frontal lobe of the model animal or in its frontal lobe cell is recovered in the normal direction or not, or administering a specimen substance into a depression model animal in whose frontal lobe the expression of one or more genes among 54 genes such as HGL-SL1 olfactory organ receptor pseudogene (Genebank AF091574) can more change than that for a normal animal or its frontal lobe cell, and then judging whether the expression of the gene in the frontal lobe of the model animal or in its frontal lobe cell is recovered in the normal direction or not.
