[Also in Division B8] Figs. 1, 2 (the latter being a section of the former on the line II-II) show a pallet with outer layers 2 of abrasion-resistant rubber reinforced by two layers of rubberized parallel steel cords 4 separated by a layer 5 of rubber of sufficient resistance to deformation as will maintain the layers of cards 4 substantially parallel. As an alternative to the rubber in the layer 5 there may be provided a layer comprising a textile reinforcement or a layer of plastic. This construction of the pallet 1 is rigid in one direction and flexible at 90 degrees to that direction. Figs. 3, 4 (not shown) illustrate a pallet rigid in both directions two additional layers of parallel steel cords being provided at 90 degrees to the cords 4. The steel may be replaced by glass fibre or other material with a high Young's modulus. The pallets 1 are for use with an air floatation system, Fig. 5, comprising an assembly of porous tiles 13 made from ballotini or silica particles bound together by an epoxy resin and supported on joists 14 with ribs 16. Air-tight joints are ensured by a sealing compound or gasket (not shown). Each row of tiles 13 with its joists 14 and supporting surface 17 form a pressure chamber with closed ends (not shown) to which air is supplied by a blower 18 through ducts 19, 20 and outlets 21. The tiles 13 may be made from material impervious to air but with perforations therethrough. |
