PURPOSE: A method for reproducing and searching caption data is provided to consecutively store searched information, and to search and reproduce a recorded position of an optical disk where caption data corresponding to inputted characters is recorded, thereby quickly outputting only caption data when a general playback operation stops. CONSTITUTION: A controller performs a series of reproduction operations for reading and reproducing a video data stream and an audio data stream(S10). A caption decoder searches and reads caption data from the video data stream(S11), and stores the data in a memory. The caption decoder searches recorded position information or reproduced time information of the video data stream, and stores the searched information with the caption data(S12). The controller decides that a caption study mode is requested by a user(S13), stops a general reproduction operation, and controls an operation of the caption decoder. The caption decoder sequentially reads the stored caption data(S14), and displays caption images corresponding to the caption data(S15).
