<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To check propriety of an extension memory with high reliability. <P>SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus provided with a reversible compression/expansion function 19 and loadable of an extension memory 21, includes: a means 15 for generating test pattern data; a means 22 for writing reversible compression data of the test pattern data and expanded data to the extension memory 21; and test control means 22, 23, 101 for reading the reversible compression data of the extension memory 21, expanding the data, forming an image, reading the expanded data in the extension memory, and forming an image, and a user compares printed images.
