PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image processor for satisfactorily reproducing a design part represented in color in generating a monochrome image from a color image. SOLUTION: An area determining part is provided with character area detection 7 for detecting a character area in an image and background area detection 8 in the image, and the signal space is made different in generating a monochrome image signal from a color image signal on the basis of detection results from the character area detection 7 and the background area detection 8.
