PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provided a handy scanner capable of reading an image on a curved surface. SOLUTION: A holding body for holding a read unit constituting a contact optical system is provided with a pair of rolls which rotate in contact with the curved surface so as to allow the read unit to move in a sub-scanning direction along the curved surface being the read object of the read unit while keeping a prescribed distance to the curved surface and are arranged on an extension of a read line on the outside of a read area and a speed detection mechanism which detects a read timing in the sub-scanning direction on the basis of a movement speed obtained by moving the read unit in the sub-scanning direction in accordance with rotation of the rolls. When the read unit is moved along the curved surface while keeping the prescribed distance, an image formed on the curved surface is taken in while detecting the read timing in the sub- scanning direction.
