PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader which excellently detects that an object is placed on a detection surface, reliably starts the reading operation of the image pattern of the object without any malfunction, and sufficiently removes static electricity charged on the object to prevent breakage of an element or a peripheral circuit. SOLUTION: The image reader comprises a transparent electrode layer 30 formed on a substantially entire area above a photo-sensor array 100, a detection circuit 40 to detect any change in capacity in the transparent electrode layer 30, and switch groups SWt, SWb, SWd and SWg to control the switching of the connection condition between the photo-sensor array 100, driver groups 110, 120 and 130, and the grounding electric potential based on the switching control signal SSW from the detection circuit 40. When a finger FG is in a non-contact condition, the switch groups SWt, Swb, SWd and SWg are turned OFF, and the photo-sensor array 100 is set in an electrically disconnected condition.
