PURPOSE: A device and method for controlling operations of a reciprocating compressor is provided to control the reciprocating compressor by only turning on and off a power switch of a control unit of the compressor through a main control unit of a refrigerator. CONSTITUTION: In a control unit(100) of a reciprocating compressor for regulating cooling force by changing stroke with up and down movements of a piston by voltage applied on an inner motor(M) to stroke command value and a main control unit(200) of a refrigerator for detecting temperatures around the refrigerator and in a cavity, a device and method for controlling operations of the reciprocating compressor is composed of microcomputers(40,50) for outputting a control signal to the temperature conditions of the air and the cavity; a load driving unit(80) for receiving driving on/off control signals of the microcomputer and outputting a driving signal of the compressor; and a relay(Ry1) switched by the driving signal to feed alternating current(AC) power source to the motor of a reciprocating compressor unit(L.COMP).
