PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem of a conventional auto-focus (AF) system such as that it takes too much time until focusing. SOLUTION: An AF evaluation value generating block is placed behind an edge emphasizing block, and a plurality of AF evaluation values afu(1)-afu(3) are obtained by plural sets of edge emphasizing parameters. It is possible to reach the focusing position quicker by calculating the difference among those AF evaluation values AF(u)=afu(3)-afu(1), and changing the magnitudeγor the quantity of shifting of focus in stages, for example, from a stepαto a stepβ(α>β) by the magnitude relation with a specified value of the difference in question.
