PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a two-dimensional photonic crystal face emitting laser and its manufacturing method wherein there is eliminated the need for a process for melting and regrowing a clad layer, and hence it can be manufactured inexpensively. SOLUTION: A two dimensional photonic crystal face emitting laser includes a photonic crystal period structure 21 wherein there are laminated on a substrate 11 a lower clad layer 122, an active layer 13 for emitting light by doping a carrier, and an upper clad layer 14, and a refractive index period is arranged in the upper clad layer 14 two dimensionally. There are further provided a lower electrode on the lower surface of a substrate 11, and an upper electrode 17 at a central portion on the upper surface of the upper clad layer 14. Light emitted from the active layer 13 resonates in the photonic crystal period structure 21, and achieves surface emission from the upper surface of the upper clad layer 14. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
