PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce costs by improving the processability of a magnetic head device. SOLUTION: A magnetic head assembly 10 is provided with a head chip 13 disposed on one side of a plurality of magnetic head elements 12, a pair of protective chips 14 arranged to face one side face of the head chip 13, a pair of side chips 15 arranged to hold the head chip 13 and the protective chip 14 therebetween, a pedestal 16 to which the head chip 13 and the side chip 15 are attached, and a flexible printed wiring board 17 connected to the ends 12b of the plurality of magnetic head elements 12. A material having Vickers hardness 1500 or lower is used for the pedestal 16. Thus, the magnetic head device is lightened. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
