PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To remarkably decrease a noise, power consumption and an error occurrence rate by decreasing a rotation speed of a recording medium at data recording or reproduction down to an optimum rotation speed in matching with an information transfer speed of an interface standard with an external device. SOLUTION: A CPU of a DVD drive unit confirms an interface standard stored in a firmware program and selected at present, acquires an upper limit of an information transfer speed of the interface standard selected at present from a host I/F controller 4, calculates the slowest rotation speed among rotation speeds satisfying the upper limit, sets the calculated rotation speed to a spindle controller 16, and the spindle controller 16 drives an optical disk 21 at the setting rotation speed to record or reproduce information.
