Sustained release tablet containing hydrocolloid and cellulose ether

A solid sustained release pharmaceutical tablet for administering to a host, comprising a therapeutically effective amount of a pharmaceutically active ingredient and a sustained release carrier. The sustained release carrier comprising (a) a hydrocolloid selected from the group consisting of xanthan gum, guar gum, and alginic acid or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, and (b) a cellulose ether, the hydrocolloid and cellulose ether being present in synergistic effective amount to retard release of the pharmaceutically active ingredient. The hydrocolloid being present in amount ranging from about 0.3 % to about 7.0 % by weight of the tablet and the cellulose ether being present in an amount ranging from 3 % to about 20 % of said tablet, and cellulose ether being present in the carrier in amounts equal to or greater than 33 % by weight and the carrier being present in amounts less than 35 % by weight of the tablet.
