<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To restore an illegal value recorded in the case of a power failure during recording to a normal value. <P>SOLUTION: This card reader comprises a sensor for detecting a card which runs in a card transporting passage and a memory part for memorizing a discrete value of running times of the card as to an output from the sensor. The memory part is provided with at least a first, a second, and a third memories for sequentially storing a memorized counter value. When a power supply is turned on, data in the first, the second, and the third memories are compared mutually. When these three data are all the same, it is judged to be a normal ending (step 9/S9; Yes).
