<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress gradation discontinuity that occurs between a correction processed area and a correction non-processed area and to improve the appearance of an output image by gradually changing the magnitude of correction of visibility of an image on one side from the other side in a halftone area. <P>SOLUTION: When an image input device digitally inputs a color image (S1), the inputted image data is subjected to low resolution and smoothing (S2), and threshold processing is then applied to a characteristic amount such as an edge amount and a luminance value in each pixel of the image data to estimate front surface pixels, and processing for correcting image visibility from the other side is applied to the pixels estimated as the front surface pixels (S3). In such a case, a correction factor for controlling the magnitude of correcting the image visibility from the other side is gradually changed on the basis of the characteristic amount and a predetermined function and locally and adaptively determined. The determined correction factor is then used to apply correction processing to the image data, and the corrected images are subsequently combined (S4) and outputted by using an image printer. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO |
