<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To extend functions in a system having a semiconductor element capable of communication, without re-designing the semiconductor element. <P>SOLUTION: As a system configuration, a present type semiconductor functional element capable of mutual communication, a new type semiconductor functional element, and a reader/writer are provided. The new type semiconductor functional element communicates with the new type semiconductor functional element and the reader/writer by using different commands. The new type semiconductor functional element communicates with the reader/writer and the present type semiconductor functional element. The new type semiconductor functional element, as a result of this communication, obtains a new function unrealizable by a single element of the present type semiconductor functional element as a systematic operation of the whole of the new type semiconductor functional element and the present type semiconductor functional element, according to directions from the reader/writer.
