PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To increase the restorability in reproduction of data recorded on a recording medium by properly selecting retry processing as to an image data recording device which selects skip recording processing and drop recording processing as the retry processing in case of a failure in writing processing of MPEG-based encoded image data to a recording medium. SOLUTION: A data kind decision circuit 21 decides a data kind and a data importance deciding circuit 22 decides that the data has high importance according to the data kind when the data include at least one of an SH (sequence header) and an I picture and low importance when not. Then a retry processing selecting circuit 16 selects the skip recording processing for high-importance data and the drop recording processing for low-importance data. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
