PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To read an image of a thick document like a book or a magazine, a perpendicular document like a timetable at a bus stop, or the like without depending on the shape, a material, a state, etc., of the document. SOLUTION: The image reader is provided with an optical unit, an optical unit installation frame 2 for holding the optical unit 1, and pedestals 3 used as clamps. The pedestals 3 used as clamps are attached to the bottom of the optical unit frame 2 with screws, and the length of screwing for attachment is changed to control the distance from the optical unit 1 to the surface of the document, thus coping with read of a thick document. When the document is vertical one like the timetable at a bus stop, four corners of the optical unit frame 2 are screwed so as to hold the document between the pedestals 3 used as clamps, so that the reader itself can be fixed without being shifted even on a perpendicular surface and the document can be accurately read.
