PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To magnetically transfer a satisfactory magnetic pattern. SOLUTION: A first magnetic field strength necessary for an initial magnetization or a transfer is applied to a region T<SB>1</SB>which is one region in the track direction of a slave medium 2 and ranges from the innermost circumferential track Trmin to the outermost circumferential track Trmax by using a first magnetic field generator 40(50) generating the first magnetic field and a second magnetic field generator 45(55) generating a second magnetic field in the opposite direction to the first magnetic field. Further, an initial direct current magnetic field Hin and a magnetic field Hdu for a transfer are applied to the region T<SB>1</SB>so that the first magnetic field strength in a region T<SB>2</SB>symmetrical with respect to a slave center becomes smaller than a predetermined value.
