PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve a problem in detecting a paper side edge of printing paper that the output voltage of a sensor cannot be correctly sensed, and the paper side edge cannot be correctly detected because of the roughness of the paper edge, the flapping of paper on a sensor face, the deterioration of sensitivity of a light source or a light receiving sensor, and the dirt of the dirt of a surface. SOLUTION: The output voltage of the paper side edge position detecting sensor is sampled at every arbitrary time, the specific voltage value sampled in an arbitrary period is compared with the other voltage value, and when the difference between the specific voltage value and the other voltage is over predetermined variation width by more than a predetermined number of times, it is judged that the paper side edge part exists on a non-detection area of the paper side edge position detecting sensor.
