PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a polyphenol resin whose cured material exhibits sufficient flexibility and flame retardance and has a small amount of chlorine impurities in the resin. SOLUTION: The method for producing the polyphenol resin comprises condensing phenol with a biphenyl compound (bischloromethylbiphenyl, bismethoxymethylbiphenyl or bismethylolbiphenyl), removing the unreacted phenol, rereacting the unreacted phenol with the biphenyl compound, adding an alkylphenol to the system, dissolving the reaction product, further adding warm water to the system, dissolving ionic impurities remaining in the system in a water side with stirring, allowing the solution to stand, carrying out separation, removing the water layer out of the system, repeating water washing until the water layer becomes neutral and further distilling away the alkylphenol.
