PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for decomposing and removing a fluorine-based carboxylic acid or a salt thereof which is useful as a surfactant or the like. SOLUTION: The method for decomposing and removing the fluorine-based carboxylic acid or the salt thereof comprises decomposing the perfluorocarboxylic acid having a molecular structure (1) having a tertiary carbon adjacent to a carboxy group or (2) containing a heteroatom adjacent to the tertiary carbon or through a group of -CF<SB>2</SB>-, or the salt thereof in the reaction system with the fluorine-based carboxylic acid or the salt thereof added thereto under or after the reaction at a specific condition, and removing fluorine-based part as a volatile material to the exterior of the system.
