<p>An athermalized delay line having two optical paths whose difference in optical path length is thermally insensitive. The delay line includes a polarizing beam splitter (408), a first reflecting quarter plate (412) in optical communication with the polarizing beam splitter to form a first optical path of the two optical pa ths and a second reflecting quarter wave plate (416, 420) in optical communication with the polarizing beam splitter to form a second optical path of the two optical paths. The second reflecting quarter wave plate includes a quarter wave plate (416) and a mirror (420). The delay line is suitable for incorporation into a PMD compensator having at least one compensation stage formed from a polarization controller and an athermalized delay line.</p> |
