The use of an aqueous polymer dispersion containing at least one hydrogenated styrene/butadiene copolymer as a coating adhesive for adhesive bonding of flat substrates. An Independent claim is included for adhesive bonding of flat substrates involving: (i) coating of a first flat substrate with an aqueous polymer dispersion; (ii) drying of the coating; (iii) heating of the coating to a temperature higher than the coating activation temperature; and (iv) combining a second flat substrate with the first coated substrate to form an adhesive bond at a temperature higher than the coating activation temperature.
