Protective coating for plastics containers, which has at least one thin barrier film of silicon oxide, aluminum oxide or carbon, has multilayer organic films on the barrier film, with an inner layer of water-soluble polymer (I) on the barrier film and an outer layer of water-insoluble polymer (II). An Independent claim is also included for the production of the protective coating by applying the thin barrier film(s) first, then a (I) layer and finally a (II) layer.
