<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing a ferromagnetic powder with adequate dispersibility and suitable for a magnetic recording medium, which does not cause stacking of fine ferromagnetic powders, and to provide the magnetic recording medium by using the obtained ferromagnetic powder, which has a superior output in short wavelength and C/N, and a low medium noise, even when the medium is reproduced with the use of a magneto-resistive head. <P>SOLUTION: A method for manufacturing the ferromagnetic powder is characterized by coating the particle surface of the ferromagnetic powder with an organic compound containing a polar group as to have a dissociation constant of an acid (pKa) of 4 or less, and/or salts thereof, through adding the organic compound and/or the salts to the ferromagnetic powder and compacting them in a dry state.
