In preparation for winding core (12) change, the carriage (22) is driven (24) horizontally into a change-over position, where a new winding gap (18) is formed between the new core and the traction drum (16). Following change-over, the running band of material (10) is wound to a roll (14) exclusively on the new core, which is mounted to rotate in bearings, during the main winding phase. The carriage is arrested (32) in the change-over position. The carriage includes a central drive for the roller, which is also capable of braking. The carriage runs on rails (26), in or on the floor (28). The carriage has a mobile- or stationary electrical drive. At least two, preferably more carriages, form a complete transport system.
