The internal pressure of a pressure line (22) supplying a heater burner (10) is monitored by a sensor (44). A control unit (46) controls the burner according to the sensor signals. As well as the detection of gas bubbles the control unit:- with the sensor detecting no pressure in the pressure line starts the fuel supply pump (20) compares the fuel density dependent rise in pressure characteristic with a stored one to detect the type of fuel and control the start cycle and pump delivery accordingly by suitable programming identifies when the fuel line is empty whether a first filling or refilling is to be initiated
