PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical disk system and an optical display engine which uses a microelectrical mechanical system (MEMS) optical modulator capable of improving the performance of a conventional device. SOLUTION: The display system 50 includes an illumination source 52 and a reflector 54 which sends illumination light toward a condenser lens 58. A beam splitter 60 receives illumination light from the condenser lens 58 and reflects the light toward a microlens array 62 having a two-dimensional array of lenslets 64. The lenslets 64 of the microlens array 62 receive the illumination light and converge the light on a microelectrical mechanical structure (MEMS) reflecting modulator 70 through apertures 66 of an aperture plate 68. The MEMS reflecting modulator 70, aperture plate 68, and microlens array 62 constitute the display engine 90. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
