PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a liquid-crystal orientation material having excellent heat resistance and orientation stability, providing an arbitrary pretilt angle, having high voltage retention ratio and slight sticking. SOLUTION: The phenylenediamine is represented by formula (1) in which R<SP>1</SP>is represented by formula (2) (X is -CH<SB>2</SB>- or -CH<SB>2</SB>CH<SB>2</SB>-; A<SP>1</SP>is 1,4-phenylene or 1,4-cyclohexylene; A<SP>2</SP>, A<SP>3</SP>and A<SP>4</SP>are each independently single bond, 1,4- phenylene or 1,4-cyclohexylene; B<SP>1</SP>, B<SP>2</SP>and B<SP>3</SP>are each independently a single bond or -CH<SB>2</SB>CH<SB>2</SB>-; B<SP>4</SP>is a 1-10C alkyl group; R<SP>2</SP>is a hydrogen or a 1-15C hydrocarbon group; R<SP>3</SP>, R<SP>4</SP>, R<SP>5</SP>, R<SP>6</SP>and R<SP>7</SP>are each a 1-10C alkyl group; p is an integer of≥1).
