PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate influences by temperature unevenness and roundness in an edge part of a body to be measured to detect an edge position precisely. SOLUTION: This measuring instrument is provided with a width image picking-up device 2 having a view field along a width direction orthogonal to a conveying direction of the body to be measured 1, and for image-picking up the body to be measured 1, a logarithmic amplifier 3 for amplifying an image-picked-up image provided by the width image picking-up device 2 at an optional amplification factor, and an edge detector 4 for finding the width- directional edge position of the body to be measured 1 based on an image- picked-up data provided by the logarithmic amplifier 3. The body to be measured is measured precisely without being affected by the temperature unevenness and roundness in the edge part of the body to be measured, because an image-picked-up signal from the width image picking-up device is logarithmically amplified by the logarithmic amplifier.
