<p>A solid-state image pickup device capable of producing an image with a quality that does not degrade with time even in a thinned-out reading mode in addition to a normal all-pixel reading mode thereby to maintain a good image quality. The solid-state image pickup device comprises an imaging pixel portion (111) where pixels each having a photoelectric transducer and a reading circuit for the photoelectric transducer are arranged in a matrix. The device has an all-pixel reading mode in which pixel signals are read from all the pixels and a thinned-out reading mode in which a part of the pixels in one row or in one column, or in both one row and one column are intermittently selected to read their pixel signals. The device further comprises drive circuits (112 to 116) having a function of selecting reading circuits of the imaging pixel portion (111) in one row or in one column by means of drive signals to drive the reading circuits of the selected pixels by inputting drive signals into the thinned-out pixel rows or columns when driving in the thinned-out reading mode. A method for driving such a solid-stat imaging device is also disclosed.</p> |
