摘要 <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To determine whether a collision has occurred, whether an air bag should be deployed, and what the desirable strength of an air bag deployment should be based on occupant characteristics obtained from the segmented image of an occupant. <P>SOLUTION: This invention has the segmented image 42 of the occupant obtained from a sensor measurement 38, a tracking/predicting subsystem 46 including the occupant characteristics and discriminating the occupant characteristics from the segmented image 42, and a collision detecting system 51 including a collision determination and outputting the collision determination from the occupant characteristics. Using multiple model Kalman filters, three- dimensional characteristics are inferred from a two-dimensional image, and location, velocity and acceleration of the occupant are predicted. Kalman filters are used to incorporate past predictions and measurements into the most recent estimates and predictions to eliminate noises associated with the particular measurement. This system is capable of comparing occupant characteristics to prescribed data associated with various occupant modes and predicting the position and shape of the occupant at a faster rate than the rate at which the sensor collects data. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
