PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve such problems with a cylinder injection engine basically performing stoichiometric combustion as a combustion configuration where the assurance of the stability of combustion is difficult to be compatible with the suppression of smoke when a large amount of exhaust gas is recirculated by a conventional engine configuration and control method, and the fuel economy is not improved. SOLUTION: This control device comprises a tumble generating means and a piston capable of holding tumbles formed in a combustion chamber to the latter half of a compression stroke by the tumble generating means. Fuel injection is desirably performed two times in an intake stroke and a compression stroke. In an exhaust recirculation area, the timing of a latter injection injected in the compression stroke or an injection rate is controlled according to the operating state of the engine.
