PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and method for gas substitution in a can in which an inert gas is sufficiently substituted for air in a head space. SOLUTION: Steam S passing through a filter part on a carrying passage on the upstream side of a conveyor cover 11 is injected in a head space of the can 2 which is continuously carried on the carrying passage kept in an atmosphere of a substitution gas GN2 by the conveyor cover 11 toward a can seamer part 8, the content is stored, and an upper part is opened. A lid turret 17 of a can lid feeder 10 to feed the can lid 16 to the can seamer part 8 is covered by a turret cover 18, and the substitution gas GN2 is continuously fed in the turret cover 18.
