The assembly to treat the surface of a metal wire (3) has an electrode (4) towards the wire with a dielectric shrouding (2), linked to an alternating high voltage generator (6). This produces a dielectric restricted discharge over the wire surface in a gas zone (5). The interior of the gas zone is set at an overpressure of up to 2000 hPa. The alternating voltage is at a level of at least1 kV, at a frequency of 20 kHz to 3 MHz. The metal wire is passed continuously through the gas zone and, while in the gas zone, is heated to a temperature of at least200degreesC.
