PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hot dip Sn-Zn based plated steel sheet which combines excellent corrosion resistance, joinability and workability, and is optimum as automobile fuel tank materials, house appliances and industrial machine materials. SOLUTION: In the hot dip Sn-Zn plated steel sheet, the plated layer in the surface of the steel sheet contains, by mass, 2 to 12% Zn and 88 to 98% Sn, and the surface roughness of the steel sheet is≤1.5μm by RMS (root mean square). The boundary between the steel sheet and the plating is provided with at least one kind selected from an Ni preplated layer, an alloy layer of an Ni preplated layer and ferrite and an alloy layer of an Ni preplated layer and a plated layer.
