The operating method has at least one sensor used for detecting the pressure in the high pressure region of the fuel metering system, supplied with fuel via at least one fuel pump and a pressure setting device, e.g. a valve, used for adjusting the pressure in the high pressure region, with the pressure variation rate being limited in dependence on the maximum feedrate of the fuel pump.
