<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a character data preparing method capable of uniformly selecting a partial type face with a simple operation. <P>SOLUTION: First, a bit-map size is designated, and the bit pattern of an external type face desired to be arranged is set on the bit-map (S201 to S203). This makes it possible to calculate the width Ws and height Hs of a rectangle circumscribing the bit pattern (S204). The width Ws and height Hs are converted into vector data sizes, and a partial type face matching the converted sizes is retrieved (S205 to S206). Further, the retrieved partial type face is converted into a bit pattern of the bit-map size, and the resultant bit pattern is compared with the set bit pattern to refer to the degree of matching between the resultant bit pattern and the set bit pattern (S207).
