<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a pretensioner for a retractor for a seat belt capable of suppressing an increase in the number of parts, efficiently exerting winding performance of the seat belt and efficiently exerting the function of an energy absorbing mechanism. <P>SOLUTION: This retractor 1 is provided with the pretensioner 7 for removing looseness of the seat belt and the energy absorbing mechanism for absorbing load at the time of a collision of vehicles, etc. The pretensioner 7 is provided with a gas generator 15, a cylinder 14 led with gas of the gas generator 15, a pinion gear 12b held to rotate interlockingly with a winding drum 2 of the retractor 1, and a rack 13 provided with a piston part 13b slidably held within the cylinder 14 at a base end, holding an O-ring 18 and provided with rack teeth 13a engaged with the pinion gear 12b.
