<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an exhaust emission control device for an internal combus tion engine to promote the purification of the soot in PM and thereby achieving the reduction of the total amount of PM sufficiently. <P>SOLUTION: The after-injection is conducted after the main injection, and part of the additional fuel is exhausted as uncombusted fuel HC to increase the SOF content of the PM. The SOF having stickiness is attached to the surface of the soot, and when the exhaust gas flows through an oxidation catalyst, the soot is captured by the catalyst by the use of SOF on the surface, and the soot is left combusting at the same time as SOF combustion by the oxidating action (e in the figure attached). <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO</p> |
