PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control device for an electric power steering apparatus capable of accurately determining the state of overload by changing the determination conditions for the state of overload of an overload state detection means by using a steering torque and a steering angular velocity when a vehicle is in an overloaded state in which the steering direction of a steering wheel cannot be changed. SOLUTION: This control device for the electric power steering apparatus comprises the overload state detection means 17 for determining, based on specified determination conditions, that the vehicle is in the overloaded state in which the steering direction of the steering wheel cannot be changed when a detected steering torque signal is above a specified value, a determination mode selector means 16 for changing, based on the detected steering angular velocity signal, the determination conditions of the overload state detection means in a direction hard to be overloaded when the steering angular velocity is high, and an overload energizing control means 14 for limiting a current to a motor when the overload state detection means determines that the vehicle is in the overloaded state.
