PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To remove dirt of abrasive grains, abrasive powder and the like adhered to the surface of a glass substrate for a magnetic disk in a polishing stage without damaging the surface so as to form a latent flaw and to manufacture the magnetic disk having a reduced error. SOLUTION: In a method for cleaning the glass substrate for a magnetic recording medium by using a solution, the solution is an anode water, an anode water containing 0 to 100 mM concentration of electrolyte selected from the group consisting of hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, nitric acid, phosphoric acid, malic acid, citric acid and succinic acid, oxygen water containing 0.1 to 10,000 ppm oxygen or ozone water containing 0.1 to 10,000 ppm ozone.
