PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem that an image display device which uses a reflection type image display element becomes large in size and exhibit deteriorating contrast of a display image. SOLUTION: The image display device has a light source which emits illumination light 1 (1a), a reflection type image display element 4 which displays an image by internally reflecting the incident illumination light 1, a projection optical system 5 which projects the image displayed on the reflection type image display element on the eyes of an observer, and a light guide optical system 2 which guides the illumination light made incident from the light source to the image light projection side of the reflection type image display element and makes image light (1b) projected by the reflection type image display element incident on the projection optical system. An optical element 3 which has a fine cyclic structure and operates on the illumination light and image light optically and differently is arranged in an area that the illumination light reaching the reflection type image display element from the light source passes through and the image light from the reflection image display element to the projection optical system passes through.
