An isolator test device generates a high voltage injection across an isolator for test purposes. A detector picks up any leakage current that flows through the isolator and reports a fault. Before and after testing the isolator the isolator test device performs a self test by connecting a test pathway around the isolator under test. A test voltage is applied across the isolator and a current is detected that flows through the test pathway. The test pathway has known impedance so for a given test voltage the detector should detect a known current. An incorrect current, or no current, generates an alarm to indicate failure of the isolator test device. The isolator test device operates fully automatically. The preferred sequence of operations is to test the isolator test device, test the isolator, and re-test the isolator test device. All three tests must pass for the isolator to be passed as safe.
