PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electrophotographic photoreceptor containing an arylidene derivative excellent in charge carrier transport characteristic in a photosensitive layer and having high sensitivity, low residual potential, excellent electrostatic charge performance and excellent repetitive characteristics and to provide an image forming apparatus in which an image fog does not occur even when images are repeatedly formed. SOLUTION: An arylidene derivative represented by formula (1) (where R<SP>1</SP>and R<SP>2</SP>are each halogen, an alkyl, alkoxy, aryl, aralkyl, alkylthio or a residue for forming a ring; R<SP>3</SP>and R<SP>4</SP>are each cyano or alkoxycarbonyl; X is a condensed polycyclic hydrocarbon; m and n are each an integer of 0-5; when m is≥2, a plurality of symbols R<SP>1</SP>may be mutually the same or different; and when n is≥2, a plurality of symbols R<SP>2</SP>may be mutually the same or different) is incorporated into the photosensitive layer of an electrophotographic photoreceptor used in an image forming apparatus.
