PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide austenitic stainless steel for a flexible tube which is remarkably improved in high temperature salt corrosion resistance compared with conventional steel. SOLUTION: The austenitic stainless steel having the excellent high temperature salt corrosion resistance comprises, by mass,≤0.06% C, 1 to 6% Si, 0.2 to 5% Mn,≤0.04% P,≤0.02% S, 8 to <14% Cr, 7 to 15% Ni, 1 to 5% Mo,≤0.2% N, 0 to 0.01% B, one or more kinds selected from rare earth metals of 0 to 0.1% in total, 0 to 0.5% Al, 0 to 0.01% Ca, 0 to 2.5% Cu, 0 to 1.0% Nb, 0 to 1.0% Ti and 0 to 1.0% V, and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities, and satisfies the relation in the following inequalities (1) to (3): Cr≤3/7(Si+ Mo)+11.25 (1), Cr≥22.5-5(Si+Mo) (2), and Si+Mo≤8 (3).
