PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To well detect home position of a carriage irrespective of a platen gap. SOLUTION: In a recording apparatus, a platen gap adjustment mechanism 51 has a recording head 18 mounted on the carriage 19 traveling along a platen 20 for recording an image in a sheet conveyed between it and the platen. The mechanism 51 adjusts a platen gap PG between the platen and the recording head. Further, the apparatus has a home position detecting device 52 for detecting the home position of the carriage, and a control substrate for controlling the recording action of the recording head, the platen gap adjustment mechanism, and the home position detecting device. The control substrate, during the detection action of the home position detecting device, controls the platen gap adjustment mechanism to adjust the platen gap to be a prescribed gap to make the recording action of the home position detecting device possible, and then the home position of the carriage is detected by the home position detecting device.
