The Stirling engine comprises a working piston (16) held by a blocking mechanism (8) which can be closed temporarily at any time. The working piston is only released from the blocking mechanism during the expansion and compression phase of the working gas. The control of the blocking mechanism takes place by a sensor with a timing element, which detects the position of the displacing piston (1).
